brief history of fandom (∩˃o˂∩)★
the earliest examples of fandom as we know it today date back to the late 1800s, with "janeites" — fans of the works of jane austen — and sherlock holmes enthusiasts, who created some of the earliest fanfiction!
some fandoms that strongly influenced modern fandom were star trek — introducing such terms as "slash" and "mary sue" — and the x-files, from which we derived the term "shipping"! fans of mulder and scully in the '90s called themselves "relationshippers", then "r'shippers", and finally just "shippers".
most importantly, adults have ALWAYS been a part of the fandom. younger members of fandom, do NOT come into fandom spaces and shame adults for being "weird" and tell them they are "too old" to be reading or writing fic or making art. they built the spaces you are enjoying. they have every right to comfortably exist in those spaces.
censorship ( •̀⤙•́ )
this is possibly the biggest and most controversial topic in fandom. fortunately, there IS a correct stance!
the best summary i can provide is that things that make me uncomfortable still have the right to exist in a FICTIONAL setting where they cannot harm real people and can even be used as a method of exploring one's trauma or recognizing danger signs. open conversation and education reduce harm. censorship breeds secrecy and shame.
censorship is authoritarian. any censorship opens us up to more censorship. the government should not have power over what is acceptable fiction. it's a very important political stance to hold, especially as fascism is rising and newer generations are falling for propaganda because it seems morally right and pure and comfortable.
please check out the "censorship" link at the top of the site to learn about censorship in more depth.
are the curtains just blue? (╭ರ_•́)
there is no one right way to enjoy fandom, but there ARE wrong ways.
there’s been an increase in conservatism and a decrease in media literacy (due to propaganda targeting younger generations while we are simultaneously dumbed down by cuts in education [by the government], especially the arts, and the pushing of genAI [by the billionaires] to replace thinking for ourselves).
many people cannot stand to think that artists would think or care deeply about things because they themselves are not capable of it/find it “cringe”. people swing too hard between "it's not that deep" and "it's not real who cares", when the reality is that enjoying mindless entertainment is okay, but making sure you're assessing yourself for bias, not denying issues in the media you consume, and not ruining the experiences of people who DO like to think deeply is important!
fandom in general is a lot more miserable because “normies” with no etiquette and, often, no real passion discovered whole worlds during the pandemic, treated them like a shiny new toy, and have now taken over. that is why i made this site — this is not your shiny new toy. this is a culture. you are entering OUR house, and must be respectful to earn your place here.
so don't shame people for "thinking too deeply". don't tell people they "care too much". art does not just spawn into being — everything is a choice. analyzing those choices, however small, is never worthless.
